HEY, YOU! This post is extremely image-driven… but the images are currently dead. If the numbers start racking up on this post, I’ll come and fix it. Until then; sorry about this.

This year I decided to travel every month in 2018. One of the potential problems identified was the lack of ideas for destinations and activities. I decided to pluck out two destinations and leave the rest of the adventure with the general public using Instagram polls to decide. We (don’t think I’d go without Amy) started at 4am on Saturday morning. This is how it went:

Day 1

Italy vs Portugal

The public chose Italy as our destination. A pretty great first day ended up in Venice with pizza, wine and a canal-side hotel. Instagram polls had treated us well!

Day 2

Wine vs Coffee

Another lovely day began with an expensive coffee and some time with the Venice canals. Pasta and beer followed, despite our repeated efforts to buy more wine. It was a running theme on this journey, as drinking wine in Italy just seemed… right?

Day 3

Palace vs Museum

Statues vs Paintings

Gondola vs Wine

Another lovely day, but with less choices. The decisions made by the audience on Instagram polls took longer than the previous two days so we had less time for activities. It was nice doing some more conventional tourist activities in Venice, though.

Day 4

Pizza Cutter vs Cork Screw

Pizza Cutter vs Cork Screw

Flying home on Tuesday morning left time for only one decision; souvenir tat. With some left over Euros and in a bit of a hurry I actually bought both (cheating, I know). However the Instagram polls were in favour of the cork screw and it was just as well because security took my pizza cutter at the airport. I don’t know how a pizza cutter is considered more dangerous than a cork screw, but there you go.

Instagram polls for my next trip

Expecting people to troll us, it was a pleasant surprise when they sent us off to do fun things. For my next journey I will likely involve the Instagram audience a lot more. My decisions usually lean quite heavily towards a lovely, relaxing drink… so it was nice to be told we had to go out and do something real instead. Now to start planning for February’s Instagram polls travel!
