2016 was a year of exploration and professional reassessment. This post reflects on a career shift towards UX design, a Southeast Asia backpacking adventure, and the challenges and triumphs of this transformative year.

Embracing Travel: Southeast Asia Adventure

A long-held dream, I embarked on an extended backpacking trip through Southeast Asia. I spent the latter half of the year exploring this incredible region, visiting Thailand (Bangkok, Koh Samui, Krabi), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Indonesia (Bali, Jakarta), Singapore, and Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi).

Closing the Chapter on My Startup

With mixed emotions, I closed the doors on my first startup, Paper Street Games Ltd. The company generated some sales, but significant growth remained elusive. Ultimately, I lacked the ambition to aggressively expand the business. Scaling the company would have required additional investment and a longer-term commitment than I was prepared to make at that time.

Building a UX Design Portfolio Through Freelance UI Design

Transitioning to UX design requires showcasing my abilities. To build a portfolio that demonstrates my understanding of user experience (UX), I embarked on a series of freelance UI design projects. These projects allowed me to apply my growing knowledge of user-centered design principles and develop practical skills in wireframing, prototyping, and interface design.

The Challenge of Finding My Professional Footing

While the freelance work provided valuable experience, I also experienced periods of uncertainty. Finding consistent freelance work and defining my long-term career goals within the UX field presented ongoing challenges.

An Unexpected Detour: Delivery Driving

Fueled by travel expenses and a shift in my technical focus, I decided to take a temporary job as a delivery driver. While it might seem like an unconventional choice, I’m actually enjoying the experience (minus some good-natured teasing from my colleagues!). This unexpected detour has provided valuable perspective and allowed me to explore different career paths.

2016 was a year of exploration and self-discovery, both personally and professionally. I learned valuable lessons about myself and my career goals, paving the way for exciting new beginnings in the years to come.
