It’s that time of year again: new year, new me… or at least a new year’s resolution. This year, I’m taking a rather unconventional approach, and it all revolves around Kanye West. Yes, Kanye West. The controversial music artist. The self-proclaimed genius. The man who inspires both adoration and eye rolls in equal measure.
Let’s be honest, Kanye West is a bit of a paradox. There’s no denying the catchy hooks and undeniable talent behind his music. But then there’s the arrogance, the outlandish pronouncements – the whole “I am God” persona. It’s enough to make you scoff. Yet, here I am, strangely drawn to this enigmatic figure.
Part of the reason lies with an unlikely source: a friend named Mylo Reyes. We met on Newgrounds, a platform I frequented in my early days. Mylo, despite being younger than me, has achieved a lot. He’s driven, successful, and – you guessed it – a huge Kanye West fan.
Mylo’s enthusiasm for Kanye piqued my curiosity. What is it about this artist that inspires such devotion? Is it the music? The message? Or something else entirely? This is the question I aim to answer with my rather unorthodox resolution.
A Year of Kanye: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Resolution
For the entirety of 2017, I will be embarking on a Kanye West deep dive. Every song, every album – my ears will be exclusively tuned to the music of Kanye. Whether it’s in the car, at a party, or blasting through my headphones – it’s Kanye West all the way (with the exception of external sources like the radio, of course).
Now, I’ll admit, I haven’t always been a die-hard Kanye fan. Albums like Yeezus and The Life of Pablo didn’t resonate with me on first listen. But this is exactly why I’m doing this – to push myself outside my comfort zone and gain a new perspective.
Self-Belief and Artistic Inspiration
Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit lost, unsure of my direction and purpose. Then I came across a Kanye quote from a few years back: “If you’re a fan of Kanye West, you’re not a fan of my music – you’re a fan of yourself.” There’s something strangely profound about this statement. Perhaps surrounding myself with Kanye’s music will spark a creative fire within me, a renewed sense of self-belief and motivation.
Let’s face it, I’m easily influenced by art. When I connect with something, it can be a powerful motivator. While I may get a little carried away at times, this artistic immersion usually has a positive impact. Maybe this Kanye experiment will be the same – a chance to reignite that spark of inspiration.

This year’s resolution is different. This year, I’m committed. Who knows, maybe by the end of 2017, I’ll finally understand the unwavering fascination with Kanye West. In the meantime, with my current delivery driver gig, I have ample time to delve into those Kanye albums I haven’t given a fair shot. Wish me luck!
